Teacher Bio:
I am Mrs. Hartman, the Special Educator at Glennallen High School. This is my fourth year teaching in Glennallen in my twelve years as an educator.
I am excited to announce that due to the popularity of Mrs. Lorence's Home Ec. Class, I will also be teaching Visual Arts.
Prior to moving to Glennallen, my family and I lived in Kentucky where I finished a Masters in Education. My husband, Hilary Hartman, is a trained Social Worker who generously temporarily ended his career for my dream to move to Alaska. We have two boys, Bailey (15) and Jakob (13).
I taught High School English for roughly a year, as I was hired mid-year to take over for the interventionist. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Masters in British Literature. I taught English for 8 years at Asbury University as an adjunct faculty member where I taught entry level English courses, such as: Exposition and Research and Western Classics. I graduated from Asbury University, receiving dual certification in English and Special Education through their Alternative Certification program.
Originally, I only planned on getting certified in English, but I was struggling with being a strong advocate for my son who has Autism. Teachers seemed to speak a different language which made me feel like I did not know what decisions were being made and how I could be a part of the discussion. I added an additional year of Special Education focused courses, and now I fully understand all the TLAs that teachers speak in (Three Letter Acronyms). I know what it feels like on both sides of the table, as parent and teacher, so I know how hard it is to hear a list of things your child cannot do and how the dreams you have for them, the opportunities they have, may change or be challenged. I try to create a program or plan for my students as if they were my own child because the dreams you have for your children are shared dreams I have for them as well.
